KAMIYO Episode 23: Izanagi and Izanami — The Creation of the Japanese Archipelago

Prologue: The Heavenly Pillar and the Golden Morning Sun

The morning after their sacred marriage ritual.

The newly risen sun dyed the "Ame-no-Mihashira" (The Heavenly Pillar), which towered at the center of Onogoro Island, in brilliant golden hues.

Izanagi and Izanami stood before the pillar, looking out over the endless sea that spread below them.

Having become true husband and wife, deeply binding all of their souls and bodies, the "Ki" (energy) flowing between the two gods was completely different from what it had been the day before.

Izanagi's robust, masculine aura and Izanami's soft, nurturing life force melted together without boundaries, forming a perfect cycle as a single, massive "Vortex of Creation."

"A beautiful morning, Izanami."

Izanagi drew his beloved wife's shoulder close.

Izanami leaned against his broad chest and gazed at the sea of chaos, now sparkling under the morning light.

"Yes. It seems the world itself is blessing our union."

The "starting point" known as Onogoro Island was complete. However, the creative power of the two gods, amplified by their sacred marriage, could no longer be contained by this one small island.

Their inner passion was boiling hot, seeking a larger, more beautiful canvas.

Now, the time had come to bring forth the true "Land."

Chapter 1: A New Departure for Creation—Deeper and Stronger

The two gods once again took up the symbol of their royal authority, the "Amenonuboko" (Heavenly Jeweled Spear).

Izanami's white hand rested perfectly over Izanagi's large hand.

The tense apprehension and fear they felt when creating Onogoro Island were no longer present.

All that remained was absolute trust in one another and the tremendous joy and expectation of giving birth to their children (the islands) from this moment on.

"Let us go, my beloved wife."

"Yes, my strong husband."

The two gods breathed in perfect unison and plunged the tip of the spear from the cliffs of Onogoro Island into the sea below.

Sploosh...!!

Beautiful ripples spread across the surface, and from where the spear touched, a golden, sacred light rose up like a geyser.

"This time, a larger island. For our love and our skills of creation have deepened."

Izanagi's voice overflowed with the absolute confidence of a god and the pride of a man.

This was not the probing, tentative stirring of the previous "Koworo Koworo." Reading the ocean currents, sorting the chaotic elements, and controlling them at their own will—these were powerful yet highly refined movements.

The overwhelming heat transmitted from the spear rapidly transformed the sea of chaos into a crystal-clear sea of life.

Chapter 2: The Birth of Awaji Island

"Pull it up!"

With Izanagi's shout, the two gods powerfully hoisted the Amenonuboko.

SPLASH!!

The moment the super-dense drop dripping from the tip of the spear struck the surface, the sea split wide open, and with a tremendous rumble, a massive landmass began to heave upward.

Rumble, rumble, rumble...!!

A heavy, profound landmass, boasting a mass and expanse incomparable to Onogoro Island.

Bare rock was exposed, but as Izanami's breath of life caressed its surface, rich green forests instantly covered it completely.

The wind blew through, rivers flowed, and the earth's veins began to pulse.

Izanami gazed at the giant, beautiful island, her face breaking into a smile of maternal joy.

"My... what a splendid child! 'Awaji Island'... such a beautiful name suddenly floats into my heart."

"Awaji Island. A good name."

Their second creation was a flawless success.

The movements of the experienced gods were more harmonious, and as if proportional to the depth of their love, the island they brought forth was strong and breathtakingly beautiful.

Chapter 3: Shikoku — The Child with Four Faces

"There is no time to rest, Izanami. Our power is far from its limit!"

"Yes, my love! Let us bring forth more and more!"

Raising voices of joy, the two gods plunged the Amenonuboko into the sea once again.

This time, they stirred the sea dynamically, as if drawing a more complex spiral.

The surface of the sea shone emerald green, and life energy bubbled up as if boiling.

"Now!"

When they pulled up the spear, a giant, beautiful island with four distinct peaks revealed itself from the sea surface.

Though it was a single island, it possessed four different climates and faces facing north, south, east, and west—a highly complex and diverse island of miracles.

Overjoyed, Izanami clasped her hands together toward the beautiful island.

"Look, my love! Four countries are bound together as one... Iyo, Sanuki, Awa, and Tosa. Each has a different face and its own unique personality!"

Wiping his sweat, Izanagi smiled with satisfaction and nodded powerfully.

"'Shikoku' (The Four Countries). Truly beautiful. It is not merely a lump of earth; each has its own rhythm of life. It is proof that our skills of creation are improving."

A single island with four faces, rich in diversity and beauty.

The deeper their love grew, the more unique and vibrant the children (islands) they produced evolved to be.

Chapter 4: Iki and Tsushima — Love for the Small Islands

Without letting the excitement of creating giant islands cool down, the two gods began to move the spear continuously and joyfully, almost as if they were dancing.

It was no longer grueling labor; it was a collaborative work of their love, filled with the fulfillment of artists creating supreme works of art.

Splash, splash!

With light, rhythmic water sounds, small but beautiful islands popped their heads out of the sea surface one after another.

The triplet islands known as Oki.

And the beautiful twin islands that would become the sea signposts leading to the continent—the birth of Iki Island and Tsushima.

Looking at these cute, small islands, which were so different from the giant ones before, Izanami narrowed her eyes lovingly.

"Even the small islands have their own unique radiance and beauty. They are like sparkling jewels."

Resting the spear, Izanagi gently stroked Izanami's hair and replied.

"Yes. Whether it is a large, powerful island or a small, lovely island, each and every one is our precious child. It is not about the size, but how much love we pour into creating them that matters."

Though different in size and shape, the love and personality of the two were imbued in each island.

That very fact spoke to the true value of the divine "Birth of the Land," which was entirely different from mere geographical terraforming.

Chapter 5: Anticipation of the Completion of Oyashima

The work of creating the land, which had begun in the morning, was forming a magnificent archipelago by the time the sun reached its zenith.

In the sea looking down from Onogoro Island, their beautiful and highly individual children—Awaji, Shikoku, Oki, Iki, and Tsushima—floated comfortably, embraced by the ocean currents.

However, there was absolutely no sign of fatigue in the eyes of Izanagi and Izanami.

Rather, their loving communication (exchange) only grew hotter with each island born, and infinite energy continued to well up from within them.

"...A magnificent view."

Izanagi sighed, surveying the grand canvas of the sea.

"Yes. But, we are not finished yet, are we?"

Izanami looked up at Izanagi with a mischievous smile.

Within her womb (vision), the premonition of a massive, unseen landmass was already swirling.

The time for the birth of the largest and richest main island, the center of the Japanese Archipelago—"Oyamatotoyoakitsushima" (Honshu)—was drawing near.

"Of course not. Let us bring forth the culmination of our love, our greatest masterpiece, Izanami!"

"Yes, my love!"

Thus, starting from the first island, Onogoro Island, Izanagi and Izanami created beautiful islands one after another.

Before the true married couple, infinite possibilities of creation spread wide open.

The myth of love and passion—the birth of the Japanese Archipelago and eventually the creation of the Yaoyorozu no Kami (Eight Million Gods)—was now about to reach its absolute climax.
