KAMIYO Episode 24: Izanagi and Izanami — The Completion of Oyashima (The Great Eight Islands)

Prologue: The Dance of Love, The Surge of Creation

The sun had passed its zenith, and its golden light illuminated the surface of the sea with a brilliant sparkle.

Standing on the cliffs of Onogoro Island, the bodies of Izanagi and Izanami were covered in a beautiful sweat from the heat of creation, but their eyes, far from showing fatigue, shone with an even more intense radiance.

Awaji, Shikoku, Iki, Tsushima.

Every time they wielded the "Amenonuboko" (Heavenly Jeweled Spear), the Sea of Chaos raised a cry of joy, giving birth to beautiful lands.

The handling of the spear, which was tentative at first, was now perfectly synchronized with the breathing of the two gods, acting as an extension of their own limbs.

"Izanami. The shape of our love is surely far more than this, is it not?"

Izanagi gazed at his wife beside him with a feverish look.

"Yes, my beloved. Deep within my heart, visions of even more diverse and beautiful islands overflow. Come, the sea awaits us."

The two gods smiled at each other and readied the Amenonuboko once more.

The era of brute-force pioneering was over. What began now was a "Dance of Love" by the husband and wife gods, painting vibrant, richly colored life onto the massive canvas of the sea.

Chapter 1: The Oki Islands — The Creation of Hidden Beauty

"What kind of island shall we make next?"

As Izanagi asked while dipping the spear into the sea, Izanami smiled, her eyes slightly downcast.

"Well... strength that bares everything is beautiful, but let us make a slightly hidden, mysterious island."

Izanagi understood her intent. Instead of mixing with brute force, he manipulated the spear with an elegant, delicate flick of his wrist, as if gently caressing the deep ocean currents.

Splash, rill...

Even the sound of the water was delicate and beautiful, like the timbre of a koto. The movements of the two gods were perfectly synchronized, taking on an artistic beauty as if they were dancing a Kagura (sacred dance).

When they pulled up the spear, a beautiful island wrapped in moist greenery quietly appeared from the sea mist. It was three small islands huddled close together—the Oki Islands.

"Oki... A good name. It lacks overt flashiness, but possesses a profound charm."

"Yes. Hidden beauty is indeed a true treasure."

Creation is not merely about raw power. Being able to anchor even concepts like "stillness" and "mystery" into the earth was proof that the two gods' understanding of creation, and their love for each other, had deepened even further.

Chapter 2: Sado Island — Perfect Synchronization

Next, the two gods set to work on creating a massive island that would be located on the Sea of Japan side: Sado Island.

This time, Izanami took the lead, and Izanagi supported her power from beneath.

"Match my rhythm, my love."

"Yes, move the spear as your heart desires."

With their hands overlapped on the hilt, the two gods drew a large, yet flawlessly precise circular trajectory.

Izanagi's immense strength and Izanami's delicate control. The two forces did not repel each other; one plus one became infinite energy, swirling the sea into a vortex.

SPLASH!!

Heaving from the surface of the sea was an exceptionally graceful, massive island, shaped like a bird spreading its wings, or two magatama (curved jewels) joined perfectly together.

Its flawless proportions caused Izanami herself to let out a sigh of admiration.

"My... To think our breathing could match so perfectly..."

At Izanami's words, Izanagi gently embraced her from behind, whispering into her ear.

"For lovers to trust each other completely and create together... so this is what it means. I did not even feel the weight of the spear."

The birth of Sado Island. Born of the couple's perfect cooperation, the island shone brilliantly amidst the waves as a symbol of "Harmony" and "Beauty" between the male and female gods.

Chapter 3: Oyamatotoyoakitsushima — The Great Creation of Honshu

"Come, Izanami. The time is at hand."

Izanagi's voice dropped lower, shifting to something much more powerful.

The swelling of the sea surface increased with a ferocity incomparable to anything before. The sea itself was trembling, anticipating the immensity of "what comes next."

"Yes. This is the culmination of our love."

The soft smiles vanished from the faces of the two gods, replaced by extreme focus and a burning passion.

Taking a wide stance, their muscles creaking under the strain, they poured their maximum divine energy into the Amenonuboko.

"This time, the land of Yamato! We put the culmination of our creation into this single strike!!"

With Izanagi's roar, the Amenonuboko pierced to the very abyss of chaos.

RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE...!!!

A deafening roar echoed as if heaven and earth were flipping over; even Onogoro Island shook violently.

The sea split open, underwater magma erupted, and bedrock of an unimaginable mass thrust upward with enough momentum to pierce the sky.

It was so massive that one could not even behold its entirety at once.

High, rugged mountain ranges, vast plains, long winding rivers.

This was the birth of the center and largest island of the Japanese archipelago, Honshu—bearing the divine name "Oyamatotoyoakitsushima".

"Oooooh...!"

At its overwhelming scale, Izanagi let out a victorious war cry.

Izanami poured all her life force (mana) as a prayer toward that vast land.

"Honshu... May you become a warm and powerful 'Mother Earth,' nurturing the many lives that will soon be born."

It was the moment their greatest collaborative work, gathering all their experience, skill, and love, spectacularly bore fruit.

Chapter 4: Tsukushi Island — The Completion of Kyushu

"This is the last one! We shall block the south of the earth and give it form!"

Despite having just birthed Honshu, the energy of the two gods, far from being depleted, had reached its absolute peak.

With fluid movements, they wielded the spear, stirring the sea area located to the southwest of Honshu.

BOOOOM!!

Along with volcanic eruptions, a hot, energetic land emerged from the sea.

This was the birth of Tsukushi Island, later known as Kyushu.

Like Shikoku, it possessed four faces (countries)—Tsukushi, Toyo, Hi, and Kumaso—making it a beautiful land overflowing with extreme vitality and heat.

"Phew..."

Izanagi and Izanami finally pulled up the Amenonuboko and took a deep breath.

In the sea before them, the islands they had spent the day birthing lined up in a breathtaking panoramic view as far as the eye could see.

Awaji, Shikoku, Oki, Kyushu, Iki, Tsushima, Sado, and Honshu.

These eight giant islands were collectively called "Oyashimakuni" (The Great Eight-Island Country).

Izanami looked lovingly over the islands and buried her face in Izanagi's chest.

"The birth of Kyushu... With this, our island-building is complete."

Izanagi held his mud- and sweat-covered wife tightly, gazing proudly at the vast ocean.

"Yes. Oyashimakuni... Our beautiful, powerful homeland is complete."

The Japanese archipelago, the crystal of Izanagi and Izanami's love and skill, had finally revealed its perfect form upon the sea.

Chapter 5: Sunset Vow, Thirst for Life

Before long, the sun leaned toward the western sea, dyeing the newborn Oyashimakuni in a burning crimson.

The golden shining sea surface, and the dark silhouettes of the islands floating upon it.

Looking out over that spectacular view from Onogoro Island, Izanagi and Izanami simply held hands quietly.

The sense of accomplishment from finishing a great work, and their deep love for each other.

But what floated on their expressions was not the relief of an "end," but a burning "expectation" for the next stage.

"My love... The islands illuminated by the setting sun are truly beautiful..."

Izanami murmured softly as the wind blew through her hair.

"But, it is still too silent. There are plants and trees, but nothing that moves. This vast home still lacks a 'Family'."

Izanagi nodded powerfully, wrapping his hands around hers.

"Exactly. Our nest of love is complete. Now, let us give birth to the gods to fill this country."

In his eyes, the flame of a new passion flickered.

"Gods to rule the sea, gods to rule the mountains, gods to blow the wind and nurture the trees... We shall give birth to countless gods, directly from our own bodies, to bring life and culture to this beautiful homeland."

"Yes, my love. For that is exactly what my body is for."

Izanami's cheeks dyed a red deeper than the setting sun.

Thus, Izanagi and Izanami completed the beautiful Japanese archipelago (Oyashima) through love and cooperation.

However, the mission of the Creator couple was not yet over. The massive stage known as the homeland was set. Next, the time had come to birth the Yaoyorozu no Kami (Eight Million Gods) who would flourish on that stage.

The focus of their love shifted from "Earth" to "Life," and Japanese mythology plunges into the even more heated chapter of the "Birth of the Gods" (Kamiumi).
