KAMIYO Episode 21 – Izanagi and Izanami stirring the sea of chaos with Amenonuboko, birth of Onogoro Island, Japanese mythology illustration

KAMIYO Episode 21: Izanagi and Izanami — The Beginning of the Birth of the Land

Prologue: The Heavenly Floating Bridge, Vertigo on the Borderline

At the lowest layer of Takamagahara (The High Plain of Heaven), the sole gateway to the lower world.

There, a massive rainbow arch connecting heaven and earth, the "Amenoukihashi" (Heavenly Floating Bridge), spanned the void.

On that bridge stood two gods.

Izanagi and Izanami.

The young couple gods who carried the hopes of the Kamiyo-nanayo (Seven Divine Generations) on their shoulders.

The wind blowing across the bridge was different from the fragrant aroma of Takamagahara; it carried a somewhat raw, rough humidity.

It was the scent of the fetal movement of the primitive world, struggling to be born.

The two gods timidly peered down.

There, the endless "Sea of Chaos" spread out.

Described in the Kojiki as "floating fat upon water" and in the Nihon Shoki as "like a jellyfish," it was a void space where muddy dark matter squirmed infinitely, without distinction between solid, liquid, or gas.

There was no up, no down. Even gravity was undefined; it was absolute chaos ruled only by entropy.

"Is this... the world where nothing yet exists?"

Izanami gasped.

It was too vast, too alien.

Staring into that abyss, she felt an intense vertigo, as if her very soul were about to be sucked in.

"Are you afraid, Izanami?"

Izanagi pulled her trembling shoulders close. The strength of his arm anchored her to reality.

"...No. If you are by my side, I do not fear even the void."

Izanami looked up at Izanagi and smiled. In her eyes dwelt a strong will for creation that lay beyond fear.

In their hands was the symbol of royal authority entrusted by the Supreme Gods, the "Amenonuboko" (Heavenly Jeweled Spear), and above all, there were their "joined hands," feeling each other's warmth.

Chapter 1: Love and Mission, Overlapping Breaths

Izanagi gripped the handle of Amenonuboko, decorated with coral and jade, tightly with both hands.

The spear was heavy. It was not a physical weight, but the weight of hundreds of millions of futures whose destinies would be decided by this spear.

From the tip of the spear, pale blue sparks scattered with a crackling sound, echoing as if carving space itself. This spear did not fear chaos. Rather, it trembled like a living creature, waiting for the moment to tear the world apart with its blade.

"Izanami. Are you ready?"

A faint tension seeped into Izanagi's voice.

If they failed, both gods might become debris in the chaos, and the history of the gods would end here.

"Yes, my love. My heart is with your heart."

Izanami placed her white, soft hand over the back of Izanagi's hand.

At that moment, a miracle occurred.

Izanagi's tension melted away, and instead, explosive energy welled up from the core of his body.

The male god's "Power" and the goddess's "Soul."

Two elements that are inherently opposite were completely fused by the catalyst of love, amplified through the Amenonuboko.

The spear raised a resonance (howling) of delight.

Vroooom...!

The sound was perfectly synchronized with the heartbeats of the two gods.

"With our love, we give 'Meaning' to this void."

"Yes. With our love, let us give birth to a new world."

The two gods looked at each other and nodded deeply.

Their breathing was attuned like a single living organism.

Chapter 2: Koworo Koworo, Interference with Chaos

"Here we go!!"

With Izanagi's spirited shout, the two gods raised the Amenonuboko and thrust it toward the darkness below.

KRA-KOOOM!!

The tip pierced the surface of the chaotic sea.

It was not the sound of water. A high-pitched metallic sound rang out, as if the world itself were screaming.

Tremendous resistance was transmitted to the arms of the two gods through the spear.

Chaos refuses order. The inertia of the world, wanting to remain disordered, rampaged to reject the intervention of the two gods.

"Urgh... What heaviness!"

Izanagi gritted his teeth. Veins bulged on his arms, and his muscles screamed.

The oil-like sea possessed viscosity, trying to entangle the spear.

"Do not lose! Pour in our will, our love!"

Izanami shouted, gripping Izanagi's hand even tighter. The hot life force flowing from her supported Izanagi's immense strength.

"Ooooooh! Stir it! Draw the spiral of life!!"

Izanagi and Izanami put their backs into it, turning the spear with their whole body and soul.

To the right, to the left.

Big, and powerful.

"Koworo, Koworo."

The onomatopoeia handed down in mythology is by no means a light watery sound.

It was the creaking sound of space itself as the entropy of a world that had been stagnant for hundreds of millions of years reversed and was forcibly reassembled into Order (Cosmos).

Rumble, rumble... Koworo, Koworo...

"Now, my beloved Izanami! Unite our hearts and give form to the chaos!"

Every time the two gods turned the spear, beautiful golden ripples spread across the muddy sea surface, and sacred light began to rise from the water.

Mud separated, clear water was born, and heavy components began to gather.

The heat of the Creators' love was triggering a chemical reaction that rewrote even physical laws.

Chapter 3: Awakening of the Sea, The Song of Creation

How much time had passed?

The sea, stirred by the Amenonuboko, was now swirling in a beautiful, massive vortex.

The sea surface, which had been black and muddy, turned into a transparent lapis lazuli color, and from the center of the vortex, a mysterious light—neither golden nor ultramarine—welled up like an aurora.

It was the moment the dead sea "breathed" for the first time.

Izanami was captivated by the spectacle.

What was once just a soup of mud was now shining and swirling like a giant living creature with a will of its own.

The rhythm of the vortex was the same as the beating of their own hearts.

"Ah, how beautiful... Can you hear it, my love? It seems the sea is singing."

Within the roaring sound, the cry of newborn life could certainly be heard.

It was a song of joy, a hymn to the countless lives that would be born from now on.

"Yes, I hear it."

Izanagi wiped the sweat from his forehead and gazed at the vortex lovingly.

His arms were numb and he was out of breath, but his expression was filled with a sense of accomplishment.

"Is this the singing voice of creation...? Our love has awakened the sea."

The Sea of Chaos began to possess consciousness.

It was the mysterious moment when mere matter transformed into a circulating "Ecosystem (System)."

Chapter 4: Crystal of Drops, Pillar of Salt

"The time is ripe! The chaos has been kneaded!"

Izanagi shouted.

The resistance against the spear tip changed. The viscosity disappeared, and instead, he felt a definite "Mass."

The essence of chaos, sufficiently kneaded, was now condensing and trying to take shape.

"Pull it up, Izanami!"

"Yes!"

The two gods synchronized their breathing and, with all their might, pulled the Amenonuboko, which had been thrust into the sea, up toward the sky.

SPLAAAASH!!

The spear broke through the sea surface.

At that moment, time across the world went into slow motion.

From the tip of the spear, drops of seawater shining in gold dripped down thickly.

"Look, Izanami. These sacred drops."

They were not mere water droplets.

They were super-high-density "Salt" crystals, condensed from Izanagi's strength, Izanami's life force, and the magic of the Amenonuboko.

The seed of the first matter in this world, hiding infinite possibilities.

Drip, drip.

The shining drops fell slowly toward the sea surface, obeying gravity.

Their trajectory was beautiful like a meteor, and heartbreakingly ephemeral.

Chapter 5: Birth of Onogoro Island, Crystal of Love

HISS... BOOM!!

The moment the drops touched the sea surface, white steam rose explosively.

The salt contained in the drops solidified instantly, attracting the surrounding seawater and piling up.

Rumble, rumble, rumble...!!

From within the sea, accompanied by tremors, a massive rock mass like a pillar rose up.

It expanded before their eyes, becoming flat land, becoming a single "Island."

The first solid earth in the world.

In a world that had only been liquid, a "Place to Stand" was born for the first time.

Izanami opened her eyes wide in surprise and joy, and instinctively hugged Izanagi.

"An island... An island has been born! Our first child!"

They held hands, watching the miracle with tears in their eyes.

Their love had taken shape and remained in the world.

That emotion exceeded the accomplishment of a Creator and was closer to the unconditional love of a parent.

Izanagi pointed to the newborn island and named it.

"An island formed by congealing of its own accord... I name it 'Onogoro Island' (Self-Congealed Island)."

"Onogoro Island... What a wonderful name."

Izanami's voice bounced with joy.

Izanagi looked powerfully at Izanami smiling beside him. Without her, this great feat could not have been achieved.

"You are the first crystal of our love. ...Come, let us go, Izanami. Our home is not in Takamagahara."

Izanagi decided to descend from the Heavenly Floating Bridge to that island.

The resolve to abandon the divine heavenly realm and live on the ground covered in mud and salt.

"We shall descend to that island, erect a massive pillar there, and build our 'Home.' From there, the true Birth of the Land begins."

"Yes, my love. I will follow you anywhere."

The memorable first step of the creation of the Japanese archipelago.

The story of Izanagi and Izanami proceeds to the "Birth of Gods" (Kamiumi), which includes further frenzy and sorrow, set on this Onogoro Island.

The footprints of the two gods will become history itself.
